As the icy grip of winter envelops the vast Taiga, the echoing serenade of an ancient wooden horn pierces the stillness. Played by the most venerable elder of the reindeer tribe, its haunting tones seem to carry the weight of generations past, reverberating through the frosted evergreens. This enigmatic ritual, as timeless as the snow itself, is a tradition shrouded in equal parts practicality and mystique.
While some believe the mournful melodies ward off malevolent spirits lurking in winter’s dark embrace, others claim the resonant calls serve as a means of communication between the nomadic reindeer people, echoing across the pristine expanse like a ghostly summons. Whatever its true purpose, this mesmerizing practice remains an integral thread woven into the rich tapestry of the tribe’s cultural heritage, a defiant affirmation of their enduring bond with the unforgiving yet beautiful Taiga.
Upon your arrival at the airport, we welcome you and board a 1.5-hour flight to Murun, the provincial capital of Khuvsgul province. From Murun, we venture towards Khatgal town by road, situated by the frozen lake, in preparation for tomorrow's grand event, the "Ice Festival." Enjoy an overnight stay at a comfortable Ger camp.
Today is dedicated to the Ice Festival near Khatgal town, brimming with thrilling activities like Ice archery, skiing competitions, ice colliding games, and horse sledging. Lunch is served at a local venue as we continue immersing ourselves in the festival's delights. Overnight stay in warm gers at the ger camp.
After breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive to Renchinlkhumbe town nestled in the picturesque Darkhad Depression, surrounded by majestic mountain ranges and pine trees. Check into a local hotel featuring wooden cabins with stove-heated rooms for a cozy evening. Dinner and overnight stay in wooden cabin rooms.
Post-breakfast, we journey to Jarganat Gol River, where year-round flow and underground thermal activity create a mystical atmosphere with steaming pine trees. Witness the unique white tree phenomenon before proceeding to the Reindeer festival, commencing with 1000 reindeer gathering at 11:00 am. Enjoy the festival's festivities and transfer to local Teepees and wooden cabins within the Taiga alongside Reindeer herders.
After breakfast, relish the second day of the Reindeer festival with engaging games and competitions among East and West Taiga reindeer herders. Following lunch, we depart from Taiga and head to Ulaan Uul town for accommodation at a local hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
This morning, we depart from Darkhad Depression, making our way southwards to Murun, Khuvsgul province's capital town. Check into a local hotel for a refreshing shower and enjoy a farewell dinner.
After breakfast, we transfer to the local airport for a flight back to Ulaanbaatar city, concluding our memorable journey through Mongolia's captivating landscapes and cultural festivities.
Reindeer milk is scarce and not available for purchase, but you can still enjoy reindeer milk tea crafted by local reindeer families. Some families, especially those with a surplus of reindeer, may offer reindeer cheese for sale. With prior approval from the owner, you can also experience a brief reindeer ride.
Regarding domestic flights in Mongolia, the luggage allowance is 15 kilograms in total, with 10 kilograms permitted for check-in luggage and 5 kilograms for hand luggage. Any additional luggage incurs a fee ranging from 3000 to 5000 Tugriks per extra kilogram.
During our journey, accommodation includes two nights in teepees within the Taiga, with stove-heated huts available as an option. We'll also stay two nights in local hotels in Murun town and one night in a log cabin in Ulaan Uul town.
Our professional expedition chef will prepare a blend of Mongolian and European cuisines, including packed lunches on days with extensive travel. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or allergies in advance. We provide mineral water, tea, and brewed coffee, while soda and juice are not included.
You'll be accompanied by certified English-speaking Tour Leaders and guides, trained by Nomadic Trails experts and the Mongolian Professional Tour Guide Association, throughout the trip.

Marvel at the breathtaking landscapes during our drives, featuring unique mountain formations, serene lakes, and frozen rivers. Evenings offer the opportunity to unwind by a bonfire with wine, sharing cherished moments and gazing at the starlit sky—a perfect way to conclude each day.
